COVID-19 Self-Screening Procedure

  1. Purpose
    1. The Nova Scotia Community College is committed to following Nova Scotia Public Health requirements as a minimum standard for COVID-19 response. NSCC further recognizes the need for our campus populations to reduce the transfer of COVID-19 by committing to professional conduct in protecting one’s self and others, participating in self-screening of fitness to be on site, adherence to NSCC COVID-19 Policy / Procedures, adherence to public health guidance / protocols and being honest / forthcoming with information involving potential exposures to COVID-19.
    2. COVID-19 is a work and learning environment hazard and NSCC is committed to taking reasonable and necessary measures to control COVID-19 in all our operations.
    3. This procedure outlines interim self-screening measures which shall be undertaken by our campus populations during the current outbreak of COVID-19 to protect the safety of all visitors, students, staff, and our communities.
    4. Screening our campus populations can reduce the risk the spread of COVID-19. All persons are also required to follow public health direction including keeping their hands clean, following cough and sneeze etiquette, and practicing social (physical) distancing.
  1. Scope
    1. This procedure applies to all persons entering an NSCC campus or building for the purposes of work, learning or service provision.
    2. Campus management teams shall maintain restricted access where possible. Campus management teams can decide to administer stricter entrance rules than those identified in this procedure but shall maintain signage and apply this procedure as a minimum.

Term Definition
Self-screening The individual declares that they do not have symptoms of COVID-19, or other risks as described on the Nova Scotia Public Health website.
Fitness to be on site The person wishing to enter campus does not exhibit symptoms and has not
answered yes to any of the screening questions as developed in accordance
with the Government of Nova Scotia COVID19 guidance and directives.
  1. Policy
    1. All persons entering NSCC buildings are responsible to read, understand, adhere to the following statement:

      I am committed to my safety and that of those in my community. I will not enter any NSCC facility if I am feeling unwell and will immediately depart if I begin to feel ill during my visit to campus. To my knowledge, I have not been in recent close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been at an exposure location or who is in self isolation. I have not answered yes to any of the screening questions as developed in accordance with the Government of Nova Scotia COVID-19 guidance and directives. By entering the campus, I agree to follow all NSCC and Provincial requirements.

    2. All individuals entering NSCC buildings are responsible to read, understand, adhere to, and self-declare any deviations from the following and agree that they will comply with the following:
      1. Any persons who experience symptoms of COVID-19 or feel ill must stay home or inform their instructor or supervisor if symptoms develop while in the facility;
      2. All persons entering the facility must wash their hands when they enter and regularly throughout the day. If hand washing is not easily facilitated, hand sanitizers are recommended for use;
      3. All persons must maintain social (physical) distancing. (minimum 2 meters, 6 feet);
      4. All persons must comply with and participate in NSCC cleaning protocols;
      5. All persons must follow prescribed procedures identified on signage for entry, exit and wayfinding;
      6. All persons must work safely and fulfil their role in identifying health and safety issues, including those associated with COVID-19;
      7. All persons must wear a mask while in a public area, when prescribed by work procedure or when social distancing cannot be maintained.
    3. All visitors and contractors are required to sign in and shall complete the NSCC COVID19 Questionnaire. Closed construction sites shall continue to follow their COVID-19 safety plan and screening.
    4. Campuses are responsible to establish a sign-in procedure to assist in contact tracing in case of outbreak.
    5. Faculty and supervisors shall periodically remind students and employees to maintain distancing and to stay home if unwell. Reminders of this requirement will be posted on campus digital signage.
    6. Failure to adhere to the responsibilities as identified in this procedure could result in the application of the student or employee code of conduct.
    7. Failure to adhere to the responsibilities as identified in this procedure could result in persons being asked to leave NSCC property.
    8. Failure to adhere to the responsibilities as identified in this procedure could be considered negligence to uphold a signed contract by not abiding by NSCC safety standards and could result in the termination of contracts, maintenance, or work agreements.
