Standing Up Against Hatred, Racism; Standing Up For Kindness, Love - President statement

Standing Up Against Hatred, Racism; Standing Up For Kindness, Love

Jun. 08, 2021 – Statement

Hate. The reported motive behind a brutal act which took the lives of four of five family members who were simply out for a Sunday stroll in London, Ontario.

This deadly terrorist attack on an innocent family – who local police say were targeted because of Islamophobia – has left a nine year old in hospital, alone, grieving the loss of his sister, parents and grandparent. And it’s left a community in fear.

Described as a beautiful, loving, caring family by those who knew them, this senseless act also leaves their community and our country in mourning… just as the Quebec City mosque massacre in 2017 did.

Because hate unchecked will continue to act as an accelerant to more hate and more acts of violence, I ask that we all:
  • stand together in memory of this family and in honour of the one young survivor and the greater community
  • stand up against hatred, discrimination and racism
  • and stand for actions and behaviours that serve as accelerants of kindness, inclusion and love.

We will half-mast our flags on Wednesday (June 9) in honour of this family and in support for the national community in mourning. As always, please know there are supports if you need them for our students and employees.
