Program Overview

Due to constant changes in technology, employers today are looking for electricians capable of working in residential, commercial and industrial settings. This program offers practical and theoretical training in both construction and industrial trades.

Electricians work in a wide variety of buildings and facilities – on everything from lighting and climate control systems, to communication equipment and thousands of other specific tools and devices. An Electrician's work involves assembling, installing, commissioning, testing, maintaining, servicing and operating electrical systems and equipment.

Admission Requirements

  • High School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.

Choose NSCC

  • This program is a first step towards certification in the Construction Electrician or Industrial Electrician trades. To become certified, you must register as an apprentice with Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA). Once registered, you can transfer credit from this program towards your apprenticeship.
  • You benefit from our expert faculty, who bring years of experience and strong industry connections to the classroom.
  • You get hands-on and practical training. This program teaches a balance of theory and practical application, which means you read and study how to do a job and then you actually get to apply those skills in a work-like setting.

Part-time Study

  • This program is available for part-time study. You complete your program through a combination of online and in-class courses (some courses are delivered 100% online). In-class courses are held at Ivany Campus. No additional campus locations are available.
  • When applying for part-time study, you must meet all the admission requirements.
  • Once admitted, you are referred to a campus for course selection.
  • The time to complete the program through part-time study is two years.
  • Tuition for part-time study is calculated on a per-course basis and is paid at the beginning of each term.

  • Certification with a Red Seal – Construction Electrician or Industrial Electrician are designated trades in Nova Scotia. Graduates who complete an apprenticeship program in this trade are eligible to write the provincial certification exam, receive their certification and Red Seal. The Red Seal allows certified tradespersons to practise the trade in any province or territory in Canada – where the trade is designated – without having to write further examinations.
  • You require a Certificate of Qualification issued by the NSAA to legally work in the Construction Electrician trade in Nova Scotia.
  • Safety Training – This program places a high importance on providing you with skills and knowledge to work safely in industry. You participate in a number of introductory safety awareness courses to prepare for employment.
  • Industrial safety standards require that you have adequate vision and colour perception to operate safely in the shop and in the field while performing tasks of this trade.
  • Many employers in this industry require a current, official Criminal Record check as part of the hiring process. A conviction on your criminal record may impact your ability to secure employment.
