Concentration Overview

The Community Services concentration is a 2nd year option of the Human Services diploma program.

In this concentration, you develop knowledge and skills to work as front line/entry level professional helpers support clients in a range of human service settings. Community Services professionals work with individuals in need of various support and advocacy services. This type of service can involve working with youth from age 7-21 and / or individuals of any age category with mental, intellectual, or developmental disabilities.

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of Human Services (Year 1) or Advanced Standing based on a degree and/or work experience.

  • You are well prepared to work with diverse populations – You develop foundational knowledge and understanding for a number of different populations with a primary focus on developing helping skills and strategies, including facilitation, creative problem solving, and assessment that can be used to help individuals of all ages.
  • Learn from instructors who bring a range of academic and professional experiences to the classroom.

Employment Opportunities

  • Graduates find employment in services for individuals in transition homes for special care, family support and resource centres, emergency shelters, after school care projects, and not-for-profit organizations that provide service to children, youth, and adults.
