This course allows learners to customize learning around an additional topic of interest. Learners prepare a course proposal for approval by the instructor. Upon approval, they pursue their proposed studies, culminating with a final project, essay, presentation or demonstration. While the content of the presentation should be accurate and well documented, the goal of this course is the self-direction of learning.

Flash Game Development This project-based course takes the learner from the fundamentals basics of programming to developing real time and turn based games using Adobe Flash. Object oriented programming techniques as well as best practices are all explored and mastered through the development of various games from moderate to advanced complexity. The learner is encouraged to explore Flash technology and all its facets while developing a fully working game prototype of their own design for deployment on web and mobile platforms.

Game Design and Mechanics This course introduces the learner to the core theory of game design. It develops and understanding of the fundamental principles behind the rules and play of electronic and non-electronic games. It is the study of rules of design, play mechanics, game balancing, interface design along with the integration of visual, audio, tactile and textual elements into the game experience. They will learn to develop a critical vocabulary for developing player profiles and creating engaging player experiences.

Games Prototyping This course provides learners with an opportunity to apply learning from the Game Design and Mechanics course as well as the Game Level Design course to the development of a playable game. A key goal of Game Prototyping is the application of theory learned in the first semester to the creation of a game. Learners will use software to build a game based on a game design of their own creation. Learners will gain a greater understanding of the phases of game development, work flow, group dynamics and the importance of good communication skills.
