Concentration Overview

The Geographic Information Systems concentration is a second year option of the Geographic Sciences diploma program.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is one of the fastest growing technology sectors in the world. With GIS, technical users link and analyze spatial data sets to model the real world in support of the decision-making process. This concentration prepares you by giving you indispensable GIS skills and how they apply to environmental, municipal and resource management projects.

You're engaged in a full range of geomatics activities, including collecting geospatial data using GPS and remote sensing and storing, manipulating, analyzing, interpreting and communicating geographic information within a variety of disciplines.

This program is located at NSCC's Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS). COGS is the Lawrencetown site of Annapolis Valley Campus.

Student Highlights

  1. 1
Highlight"Collecting GPS data in the field and converting it into shapefiles that can be used on ArcGIS software."
  2. 2
Wish I Knew"How much programming and statistics is involved with GIS."
  3. 3
Why Take It"It complements many other concentrations such as geography, biology, geology and business. It builds technical skills which you may not have acquired in university."

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of Geographic Sciences – Year 1 or Advanced Standing.
  • Advanced Standing – To be considered, you must apply to and meet the Admission Requirements for the Geographic Sciences program. Advanced Standing is based on academic credits (certificate/diploma/degree) and/or work experience that meets the Academic Requirements of the first year of the program. Advanced Standing is subject to seat availability.

Employment Opportunities

  • Graduates are prepared for positions as GIS Specialists, Mapping Technicians, Civic Addressing Technicians or Graphic Technicians. Many job opportunities are available with municipal and provincial government departments, dealing with natural resources and the environment. New opportunities are growing in non-traditional areas as groups such as health, business and community services adopt GIS tools in support of better decision-making. Job opportunities are also available with private sector companies providing GIS and related mapping services.
