Completing a high school diploma is an important first step that provides the qualifications you need to prepare for a range of rewarding programs and career paths. The Adult Learning Program (ALP) is a unique program designed to meet the needs of adult learners who do not have a high school diploma. You may join the program at any time if a seat is available, and staff will help you decide on a schedule that meets your needs.
Two levels of courses (Level III & Level IV)
To find out which courses you need to take, an Adult Learning Program counsellor at your campus is available to discuss your future goals, and any educational credits you may have already completed. The counsellor and program instructors will help you determine your skill level, decide what courses to take, and assess if you need to brush up on your academic and study skills.
Level III – Courses are designed to help you improve your reading, writing, speaking, math, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.
- If your goal is to enter the workforce, Level III courses can help you to build employability skills that are necessary for entry into today's labour market.
- If your goal is to get your high school graduation diploma, Level III courses can help you build the necessary skills to be successful in ALP Level IV or Grade 11 and 12 courses.
Level IV – Courses may be counted as credits towards the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults.
To graduate with the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults, you must complete 12 credits from either the public school program Grades 11 or 12, or the ALP Level IV. These must include:
- 1 credit in Mathematics
- 2 credits in Communications, English Language Arts, or French Language Arts
- 1 credit in Science
- 1 credit in Technology, Mathematics, Science, or Social Science
- 1 credit in Global Studies
If you already have some Grade 11 or 12 credits, they can count towards your diploma. Other credits you may have - from vocational school, colleges, or universities - may be accepted as transfer credits. Credits may also be granted through a process of recognizing prior learning (RPL). Documentation of all previous credits is required. For further details, contact the Adult Learning Program at the campus of your choice.
