Program Overview

Completing a high school diploma is an important first step that provides the qualifications you need to prepare for a range of rewarding programs and career paths. The Adult Learning Program (ALP) is a unique program designed to meet the needs of adult learners who do not have a high school diploma. You may join the program at any time if a seat is available, and staff will help you decide on a schedule that meets your needs.

Two levels of courses (Level III & Level IV)

To find out which courses you need to take, an Adult Learning Program counsellor at your campus is available to discuss your future goals, and any educational credits you may have already completed. The counsellor and program instructors will help you determine your skill level, decide what courses to take, and assess if you need to brush up on your academic and study skills.

Level III – Courses are designed to help you improve your reading, writing, speaking, math, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.

  • If your goal is to enter the workforce, Level III courses can help you to build employability skills that are necessary for entry into today's labour market.
  • If your goal is to get your high school graduation diploma, Level III courses can help you build the necessary skills to be successful in ALP Level IV or Grade 11 and 12 courses.

Level IV – Courses may be counted as credits towards the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults.

To graduate with the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults, you must complete 12 credits from either the public school program Grades 11 or 12, or the ALP Level IV. These must include:

  • 1 credit in Mathematics
  • 2 credits in Communications, English Language Arts, or French Language Arts
  • 1 credit in Science
  • 1 credit in Technology, Mathematics, Science, or Social Science
  • 1 credit in Global Studies

If you already have some Grade 11 or 12 credits, they can count towards your diploma. Other credits you may have - from vocational school, colleges, or universities - may be accepted as transfer credits. Credits may also be granted through a process of recognizing prior learning (RPL). Documentation of all previous credits is required. For further details, contact the Adult Learning Program at the campus of your choice.

Choose NSCC

  • Our counsellors and instructors understand that, as an adult returning to learning, you have unique needs. They help you to prepare, plan and pursue your learning to achieve your individual career and academic goals.
  • You study in a college environment where people are engaged in learning skills in a variety of occupational areas. If you're thinking of going on to further studies, this may help you to decide on your future.

Part-time Options

  • This program is available for part-time study. You have the option to complete your program in-class, online, or through a combination of courses delivered in-class and online. Evening classes are available at Institute of Technology Campus, Kingstec Campus, Marconi Campus and Waterfront Campus.
  • If you choose a part-time study option, you must still apply to the program and meet all the admission requirements. Once accepted, you will be referred to a counsellor at one of our campuses to develop your learning plan and schedule.
  • The time to complete the program through part-time study will vary and depend on the schedule you choose and number of courses you complete each term.

African Canadian Transition Option

If you Self-identify as being Black/from the African Canadian community (of African descent), you also have an option of starting the ALP program in the African Canadian Transition option offered at Akerley Campus.

In the safety of your classroom, you discuss topics such as racism, power, privilege, and politics, and will be encouraged to strive for excellence in all that you do. Using the principles of Africentricity, information is presented through the student’s eyes by validating African knowledge and contributions to society. You are exposed to African Canadian role models and mentors and become empowered to embrace a positive self-image.

After one year, most participants will transition into the Adult Learning Program to complete the courses needed for their high school diploma. To learn more about this option, please complete the Stay Connected form on nscc.ca or contact the Akerley Campus at (902) 491-7571.

Other Info

  • Program Length – Varies depending on your course load and progress.
  • Continuous Intake – Students can start throughout the year.
  • Online Courses – Some courses are available online. The Adult Learning Program counsellor at your campus will help you determine if online course delivery is the right fit for you.
  • Tuition & Fees – For Nova Scotia residents with permanent resident, refugee with protected person, or Canadian citizen status, there is no Tuition cost, College Services Fee, or Student Association Membership Fee for this program. However, there is a cost for the required Student Health & Dental Benefits that are provided to all full-time students. ALP students can opt-out of the Student Health & Dental Plan if they already have coverage. Alternatively, they can have this fee covered by NSCC for one year (upon completion of the first 3-months of the program). For metro campuses only, students are required to purchase a Metro Transit U-Pass. International students are required to pay international student tuition and program fees.

Required textbooks are available for loan (at no charge to the student). Students also have the option to purchase textbooks. 2013-2014 Fees are not finalized. Sign-up for Fees Notification and we'll let you know by email as soon as the fees are finalized (including approved tuition and additional program costs). To help with your planning, use the 2012-2013 Program Fees as a reference to provide an estimate of program costs.
  • Students who already have a Department of Education recognized high school graduation diploma are not eligible for ALP. Students who need additional High School credits but already have a high school diploma should apply to the Academic & Career Connections Program.
  • The length of the program will depend on the educational experience you bring with you when you register. Our goal is to help you to get your diploma in the most time-efficient way possible. Some of our students who join ALP with existing credits get their diploma in a year or less, and go on to employment or further education. Those entering with no credits will normally take longer as the program covers two years of high school. You work at a pace appropriate to you.
