It was difficult giving up a high-paying career in order to do this, but the soul satisfaction of following my dream has made it all worth it.

Susan Morrison - Baking & Pastry Arts InstructorSusan Morrison is another NSCC alumnus who turned to the College for a career change – and ended up staying as an instructor.

Susan's first career path led to a lucrative position in public relations and advertising but the pace was taking a toll on her young family. "I used to drop the girls off at day care at 7:30 in the morning and not be able to get them until 5:30 at night," recalls Susan. "We'd all drive home crying because we were so tired and hungry." She decided then and there to focus on her children until they were both in school.

When the time came to return to the paid workforce, Susan opted for an entirely different career. "Baking had always been my hobby – the thing that really struck a chord in me and made me truly happy," she says. She'd heard good things about NSCC's Baking and Pastry Arts program at the Sobeys Culinary Centre of Akerley Campus and decided to go for it.

Taking a chance doing what she loved has certainly paid off. Immediately after graduating, Susan had multiple job offers and became the pastry chef at two prestigious Halifax restaurants. She now owns her own business, "Morrison Baking Arts", teaching baking and cake decorating in stores and private homes. Susan's also the author behind a well-read blog for foodies called "Kitchen Addictions." And somehow, she's found the time to join NSCC's Continuing Education team, offering her own baking courses.

Looking back, Susan is proud of the tough choices she made to put her family first and then follow her heart.

"It was difficult giving up a high-paying career in order to do this, but the soul satisfaction of following my dream has made it all worth it," Susan says. "I'm so happy if my story can be helpful or heartening to others. I hope that I'm an example to young people; especially my daughters."
