I wanted a career that involved creativity. The artistic aspect of map-making interested me and my NSCC diploma in Cartography led to a series of consecutive government contracts immediately after graduation.
A few years into my career, I decided to enrol in another NSCC program – Graphic Design. My Cartography diploma provided me with advanced status which meant I was given credit for my prior learning. I graduated with honours standing. With two diplomas in hand, I then headed to Santa Barbara, California to work for an international mapping company. After two years, I returned to Nova Scotia to work as a Geographic Information Systems specialist, and surprisingly, an entrepreneur.
What began as simply making custom designed purses for friends, exploded into "BissBags". I posted a few photos of my bag designs on Facebook and within minutes, people were writing to ask if I could make them purses. The business has grown beyond anything I imagined.
I plan to take some entrepreneurial courses in the future and grow the business even further. NSCC really helped me lead a creatively rich life. By giving me the space and the freedom to discover who I was becoming.
