Helping Haiti
I wanted to take a course that didn't just benefit me personally but could help someone else in the world.

The earthquake in Haiti may have happened thousands of miles away but it hit home for second-year Business Administration student Nikita Ross.
The 20-year old was taking the course 'Social Enterprise and Corporate Social Responsibility' at the Waterfront Campus when the disaster struck. The course is a hands-on elective, and much of the curriculum is based on a class project that gives back.
"I wanted to take a course that didn't just benefit me personally but could help someone else in the world," Nikita says.
Instructor David Upton suggested a project to help Haiti. In a matter of weeks, Nikita and a team of classmates organized a reception and silent auction which raised more than $7,000 for Habitat for Humanity. The money will pay for several transitional housing units.
"Everyone seemed kind of amazed that we were putting so much effort into this and that it had kind of gone beyond a school project and turned into something bigger," says Nikita with a wide smile.
The project's success has even made her reconsider her career options. She knew she was interested in marketing or advertising, but now she knows it is definitely going to be in the notfor-profit sector.
"I know you're not going to make as much money if you work for a not-for-profit, but after realizing that you can feel good just by helping, even if you aren't making money to do it, that's definitely a big plus for me."
