Developing Carpentry skills

I realized that I loved working with my hands and getting a chance to see what I'd made at the end of the day.

Justin St. Onge - Developing Carpentry skillsThis 23-year-old has an impressive track record of throwing all of his energy behind the things he enjoys. Not only is Justin an accomplished concert violinist, he's also a competitive cyclist. And when Justin discovered his love of carpentry work while working as an apprentice one summer, he acted on it.

"I realized that I loved working with my hands and getting a chance to see what I'd made at the end of the day," says Justin. By the time September rolled around, Justin made the switch from his university degree program to NSCC's Carpentry program.

"I felt like I got a really personal education at NSCC. The instructors had a lot of time for students," says Justin. "My instructors suggested I try my hand at every aspect of the trade, so I've taken jobs in residential carpentry, finish work, concrete form work, and heavy construction." He also continued to develop his skills through Apprenticeship.

Justin is preparing to write his final exam which will certify him as a Red Seal Carpenter – an internationally recognized credential. Justin is looking forward to a career with limitless possibilities – at home and abroad. "There are big churches in Europe that need carpenters to work on them," he says. "They need carpenters everywhere. I'm definitely not scared of lack of work."
