Jordan Kennedy
Apprentice Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic
I had two of the best instructors you could meet. They would always help you out with anything.
Jordan Kennedy
Growing up, Jordan Kennedy loved to help his dad repair cars and trucks. When it came time to choose a career, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps. Jordan enrolled in the two-year Heavy Duty Equipment Truck & Transport Repair program at NSCC's Akerley Campus.
Jordan excelled and in his second year was asked by one of his instructors to compete in the Nova Scotia Skills Competition. He won Gold, earning the right to compete in the Canadian Skills Competition in Calgary. "I was pretty nervous, but my whole family and my instructor came and that helped a lot," says Jordan. Competing against students from every province, Jordan surprised himself by coming out on top and winning Gold again. "It was such an exciting experience," he says, "a real once-in-a-lifetime event."
After graduating in 2008, Jordan scored an "awesome" job with the Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service. As an Apprentice Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic, Jordan helps service and maintain fire trucks at the Emergency Fleet Service Shop in Dartmouth. "I'm learning something new every day," he says. "It's different from the general truck industry because fire trucks have different equipment and apparatus. I'm also learning all about the Fire Department. There's never a dull moment."
Jordan credits hard work, great instructors, and excellent course content for his success. "Every time I talk to my younger cousin and his friends, I encourage them to check out NSCC."
