James Ingram
Award-winning focus
The great thing about the College is that there is no fluff. It was just photography day in and day out.
James Ingram
Remember the popular anti-smoking posters entitled "Great Reasons To Smoke," that showcased the bad teeth, yellow fingers, and pseudo cool of smokers? It was an NSCC graduate behind the award winning photography in that campaign.
James Ingram is no stranger to awards since creating the Halifax based commercial photographic studio Jive Photographic ten years ago. His work has been recognized by both the Advertising and Design Club of Canada (ADDC) and the regional Ice Awards, and has appeared in Maclean's, Canadian Living, Style at Home, and Wedding Bells. His client list includes Aliant, Tourism Nova Scotia, Atlantic Lotto, CanJet Airlines, Dalhousie University, and NSCC.
For someone who didn't even pick up a camera until he was 25, James career has really taken off. He credits NSCC and two of the best teachers he's ever had - Dave Campbell and Dave Thompson - with inspiring and motivating him. "The great thing about the College is that there is no fluff. It was just photography day in and day out," says James. "It was assignment driven and direct, which is exactly what I wanted."
When he graduated in 1996, James took the portfolio he'd been working on all second year and shopped it around. He met art directors, made crucial contacts, and opened a studio right away. Each year, James is happy to report, Jive Photographic is more successful than the year before.
One of the key benefits of an NSCC education for James was the fact that his instructors had a wealth of experience from years of working in the field. Today, James enjoys being able to reciprocate and share his expertise with current NSCC students, offering them work term placements at Jive. "My hope, as time goes on, is that I can do more of that. It's important."
