Practical Nursing student

I've always believed I should be a nurse. I've been working hard to make it happen and now I'm that much closer to achieving it.

Harriet Sheppard - Practical Nursing studentHarriet Sheppard's next chapter starts now. After spending the last 20 years caring for ailing family members and raising three children, the 45-year-old is ready to put herself and her own goals first. Since 2004, she has been studying part time to finish her high school education. Now, high school diploma in hand, Harriet has entered the Practical Nursing program at NSCC to achieve a life-long dream.

"Being a nurse was always my childhood ambition. When I used to take care of my aunt, she would always tell me what a great nurse I would make someday," says Harriet.

Once she completes the two-year diploma program, Harriet plans to work in her home community of Eskasoni. Fluent in Mi'kmaq, Harriet looks forward to caring for the elders of her community in the traditional Mi'kmaq way. She hopes to use her skills, her language and understanding of traditions to help more Mi'kmaq elders stay in their homes.

"I've always believed I should be a nurse," she says. "I've been working hard to make it happen and now I'm that much closer to achieving it."
