Ashleigh Veinotte
Childhood Educator
I gained real world experience and most importantly, the confidence to know that I could do the job.
Ashleigh Veinotte
Ashleigh Veinotte has an enthusiasm for care giving, but her interest lies with children. "I decided to study Early Childhood Education (ECE) because I've always loved children and wanted to make a career out of working with kids." The 20-year-old, who has a language arts-based learning disability, chose NSCC because she knew she could access the support of the NSCC Disability Services team.
Ashleigh planned to complete the two-year ECE program in three years and along the way she was able to access tutoring, negotiate extra time for tests and secure innovative speech recognition software to help manage her workload. She says the support helped make her experience an enjoyable and successful one.
Ashleigh says the greatest learning opportunities came in the form of work placements at various childcare centres. "I gained real world experience and most importantly, the confidence to know that I could do the job." Ashleigh was offered a position as an early childhood educator at the Lunenburg Day Care Centre before she graduated from NSCC.
"Due to my learning disability, school has traditionally been very difficult and often at times stressful." She credits her supportive parents, NSCC faculty and her own determination for her success. "I'm proud of my accomplishments and can't wait to start the next chapter of my life."
