Luvina Berry
Stenography, 1985 - Administrative Assistant, Industry Canada
Luvina Berry knows exactly what paved her way to a successful career. "I wouldn't be where I am today without NSCC," she says. "My training gave me the tools to go out into the workforce and make things happen."
When Luvina graduated from high school in 1984, she knew she wanted to further her education so she enrolled in a Stenography program at Dartmouth Vocational School, now NSCC Akerley. A year later she was ready for the workforce, finding work at Shearwater Airbase, and later on at the Department of National Defense.
"I learned very quickly just how important the Administrative role is in a busy work environment," she says. "Both jobs required acquiring specific knowledge about many different procedures, meeting and dealing with clients and detailed document filing. It certainly prepared me for what was to come."
Then in 1987 Luvina started a new position with Industry Canada as a Program Clerk and eventually made the move to her current position as Administrative Assistant, where she provides support for 13 staff in the Nova Scotia office. Over the years the position has required Luvina to stay up-to-date on Industry Canada's rules and guidelines in order to provide the best possible service to its clients.
"It's a job that requires flexibility, ability to communicate effectively, multi-tasking, organizational skills and the ability to be ready for anything that comes my way," Luvina says. "There are days when a little bit of assertiveness comes in handy, too."
