Heating & Ventilation Technology, 1955 - Irwin Energy Consulting Services

Arthur IrwinArt Irwin is a well-known name in many circles; he has worked in heating and ventilation for government and for private industry for more than 40 years. He is also a regular voice on CBC Radio's Maritime Noon and cable television's Country Canada. And in the music world, Art has drummed his way onto many a stage as a professional musician for over 50 years now.

This multi-talented NSCC alumnus began his career at the Bell Road campus in the mid-1950s. Art was fascinated by the theory and design aspects of heating and ventilation and says he gained an important foundation through his training.

"My diploma gave me the technical background - which is a must in this industry," he says. "Many people don't have that nowadays, but it's so important."

Art has continued his education in the field over the years - something he says is crucial to staying on top of the changing industry. His work history includes 20 years in the heating wholesale business with Wm. Stairs, Son & Morrow Ltd., 18 years as an Energy Advisor with the provincial Department of Energy and 8 years as a consultant with Kerr Controls Ltd. Art has always been interested in the development and delivery of energy related courses given at Community Colleges, Dalhousie University, across Atlantic Canada and Ontario. He has had a long affiliation with a technical research committee at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York.

Art is Past President of the Halifax Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers Inc (ASHRAE). He continues to be involved with technical committees, writing standards for the Canadian Standards Association and writes for several publications.

And not surprisingly, Art doesn't reveal plans to slow down any time soon. "This business keeps me busy, for sure," he chuckles. "There's never been a shortage of work out there. I just try to make sure I don't take on too much".
