All aboard the electric car

More and more students are asking me “what NSCC programs involve helping the environment?”  I always tell them about exciting programs such as Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology.

But the real story is this: sustainability is a big part of what we do at NSCC and it is a subject that is integrated into many of our programs.

Just ask the students in the Automotive Service and Repair program at Akerley Campus. They’re learning to harness the power of renewable energy with their brand new electric car: the Chevy Volt.

At NSCC we listen very closely to industry. We have a responsibility to train our students for today’s jobs but we also prepare students for the realities of industry for years to come. Teaching students to be good stewards of the environment is just as much about ensuring students are ready for tomorrow’s jobs as it is about practicing sustainability.

Get Started!

Hi everyone!

I want to introduce to you Aimee Redden. Aimee is a Business Administration student who is completing her five-week work term with the Student Pathways team. She is sharing her student experiences with the high school students she meets across the province. Here is her first blog post on our Get Started events. - Noel

"Is the idea of stepping into an unknown territory starting to scare you? Don’t worry! NSCC is here to provide you with all of the soothing answers to your questions. Come and check out a Get Started Event at the campus you have been accepted into. This is a chance for you to come and see what life at NSCC is really like. This is an opportunity to meet your instructors and classmates in your program, and general information about the campus.

Get Started is geared toward providing students and parents/guardians with information sessions on topics ranging from tuition and student loans, your program schedule, services available on your campus, and general information about your campus. Feel free to take anyone with you for moral support, or even to show off your new school.

As a current NSCC graduate in the Business Administration Program, I participated in my very own Get Started event back in 2010. This was my first time at NSCC and I had lots of questions about my classes, books, and supplies. Taking part in this event and learning about the campus really helped for my “first day jitters”. I met a really nice girl who would be taking the same program as me; it just so happened that we ended up being in the same class, we sat together the first day and have been great friends and colleagues ever since.

Sign up and register for your campus’ Get Started event today! Visit www.nscc.ca/getstarted and get ahead of the game, and feel good about your first day of your college career. "

Congratulations to Alex Haider for picking up two Atlantic Journalism Awards this month.

Alex is graduating from the Radio and Television Arts program in June. Right now, she is completing her work term at Entertainment Tonight Canada and is only one of six students across the country that were selected to intern on the national program. Her dedication to learning the craft of storytelling and solid video journalism has earned her the $1,200 Province of Nova Scotia Scholarship as well as the $500 CNW Group Prize. Well done Alex!
