Computer Credit

COMP 1217 – Computer Applications I is a required course in many programs at NSCC. This is a first course in computer applications designed for students in need of fundamental computer skills including the use of an operating system, the basics of email, internet, file management and word processing.

COMP 1102 – Operating Systems is a required course for several business programs. This course introduces students to the basics of computer theory, computer systems and the management of electronic information and the use of the internet for business research. Students will demonstrate an understanding of microcomputer systems, basic operating system tasks, and the operation of internet and email software.

Challenge Assessment

NSCC recognizes that incoming students have a wide range of computing skills. We try to tailor COMP 1217 and COMP 1102 to enhance student’s success at NSCC. You may not be required to take the course at all if you can prove that you’ve met the course learning outcomes.

For students with prior computing experience, we offer a COMP 1217 and COMP 1102 Challenge Assessment before the start of the term and at the very start of the term. The assessment will take place in a computer lab using Microsoft Office 2007 simulation. If you pass all modules from the assessment as well as successfully complete the project (COMP 1217 only), you can choose to not take the course. You will receive a "P" (indicating Recognition of Prior Learning). If you pass some of the modules, you also have the opportunity to complete a learning contract enabling you to take only those modules of COMP 1217 or COMP 1102 that you have not successfully challenged. If you do not take the assessment or if you do not pass the assessment, you will take the course in the normal class format.
