NSCC student wins Broadcast Educators Association of Canada Awards
May 28, 2010 – Media Release
Dartmouth, NS – Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) congratulates Paige Fossett, a first year student from the Radio and Television Arts program for winning two Broadcast Educators Association of Canada (BEAC) awards. Entries are judged against work submitted by college and university students from across Canada.
Ms. Fossett took home the top prize in the Audio Public Service Announcement category. The PSA focused on Hadassah House, a women's shelter being built in Kentville, Nova Scotia. Ms. Fossett wrote and voiced the piece along with second year student, Stephanie Wall. The piece went on to win the BEAC President's Best Audio Award, judged against all radio entries in every category from across the country. Judges described the PSA as "compelling" with a "strong read" that "could go to air on any station today."
"I am thrilled and honoured to receive these two awards," says Ms. Fossett. "I want to thank all of my classmates and the faculty for their encouragement and assistance with this project."
This is the second consecutive year an NSCC student has won the BEAC President's Best Audio award and it's the third consecutive year that NSCC has captured a BEAC award in the audio category.
"We are so pleased to have one of our students recognized again for their skills and talent in the audio field," says Dave Bannerman, who teaches radio performance and studio production in NSCC's Radio and Television Arts program.
The BEAC awards were held May 12-14 in Toronto. BEAC member institutions include most of the colleges and universities across Canada that offer diploma and degree programs in the fields of Radio, Television and Journalism studies.
BEAC also elected a new executive for 2010/2011 at the conference. Yvonne Colbert, who teaches broadcast journalism in NSCC's Radio and Television Arts program, is the new President of BEAC. Ms. Colbert previously served as the Atlantic Director of BEAC's executive board.
