High School students compete in Ready, Set, Cook!

Dartmouth, NS – High school students from across the province will be arriving today at the Akerley Campus of Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) for the sixth annual Ready, Set, Cook!. The culinary competition will see eight teams competing to prepare the best gourmet meal. The event will kick off tonight with a banquet at The Westin Nova Scotian.
On Friday, April 30 students will be at the Sobey's Culinary Centre at NSCC Akerley Campus in Dartmouth. Each team will produce a three-course meal, creating three portions of each course. The students will be evaluated on the quality of their kitchen work, culinary skills, teamwork and the quality of their food preparation and presentation by a panel of judges which includes professional chefs. Cooking begins at 9:00 AM. and the judging will begin at 12:30 PM. The winning team will be announced at the closing ceremony at 1:30 PM.
Each school has been working with a mentor chef to perfect their recipes and presentation for the competition. During their training, the teams also visited the mentor chef's workplace to get a sense of their daily routine and to see a commercial kitchen.
"Ready, Set, Cook! gives high school students an opportunity to explore the culinary industry," says Virginia Johnson, Director, NSCC, Student Pathways. "The competition gives students an opportunity to see what it is like to work in culinary arts and to decide if they have the passion to pursue a career in this field of work."
Nova Scotia Community College, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Association of Chefs & Cooks and the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council, will host the two day event. The Hotel Association of Nova Scotia (HANS) is the partner for the opening dinner and kickoff event.
High schools participating in this year's competition include Auburn High School, Sir John A. MacDonald High School, Halifax West High School, Citadel High, Central Kings Rural High School, Northeast Kings Education Centre, Cobequid Educational Centre and Hants East Rural High School.
