NSCC congratulates 2010 Regional ROV participants

April 1, 2010 – Media Release

Dartmouth, NS – Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) congratulates Dalbrae Academy, gold-medal winner of the 2010 Regional Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) competition.

NSCC's Akerley Campus hosted this exciting competition on March 25 - 26, 2010. The competition tested the ingenuity and creativity of six teams of high school students from Amherst Regional High School (Amherst), Auburn Drive High School (Cole Harbour), Richmond Academy (Louisdale), Eastern Shore Rural High School (Musquodoboit), Dartmouth High School (Dartmouth), and Dalbrae Academy (Mabou).

Each team spent months designing and building underwater robots fitted with cameras that can be controlled remotely by an operator at the surface. In this year's competition, teams had to complete a series of missions maneuvering their ROVs through a variety of obstacles underwater, including collecting samples from "caves", detecting "seismic activity" and sampling temperatures from "vent sites". The teams were also required to provide technical reports, create posters and give presentations to the regional judges.

Final results for the 2010 Regional ROV Competition are:

  • Gold – Dalbrae Academy
  • Silver – Auburn District High School
  • Bronze – Amherst Regional High School

This is the fourth year that Dalbrae Academy will represent Nova Scotia at the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education Center) International ROV Competition. Last year, the Dalbrae team competed against 26 international teams and returned home with the 1st place overall title in the Rangers Division. Best wishes to Dalbrae Academy as they compete at the 2010 MATE International ROV Competition in Hawaii June 24 to 26, 2010. NSCC congratulates all six high school teams for making this the most exciting regional competition yet.
