International Adult Learners' Week – celebrating lifelong learning
March 1, 2010 – News
Halifax, NS – Every year, Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) serves 26,000 adult learners across the province. The week beginning Monday, March 1, 2010 is International Adult Learners' week; an opportunity to celebrate their commitment to lifelong learning and share their stories about the transformative power of education.
The Canadian Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has marked International Adult Learners' Week every year since 2002 to demonstrate the importance of adult literacy and lifelong learning. The Canadian Commission for UNESCO has published a magazine featuring stories about people who continued their education, advanced their skills and improved their lives. "Opening up the Possibilities" includes an article about Elizabeth Cummings, an electrician and NSCC alumnus.
The average age of the NSCC learner is 27. While nearly one-third of NSCC students enter the College directly out of high school, another 10 per cent are 40 years of age or older. In celebration of International Adult Learners' Week, NSCC invites you to explore some of our students' inspiring stories.
