NSCC congratulates nominees for Discovery Awards

Halifax, NS – Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) extends congratulations to NSCC employees Dave Crabbe and Dr. Robert Maher, selected as finalists for this year's Discovery Awards for Science and Technology.
Dr. Robert Maher is NSCC's Senior Research Scientist with the Applied Geomatics Research Group (AGRG) and has been nominated in the Professional of Distinction category. Dr. Maher has been at the leading edge of applied geographic science for over 30 years, working around the world in a variety of sectors, from post-secondary institutions and government agencies to high-tech industry.
Dave Crabbe is a faculty member at NSCC's Burridge Campus, teaching both the Computer Service Technician and Information Technology diploma programs. Mr. Crabbe has been with NSCC for 25 years and has been nominated in the Science Champion category for his work with the First Lego League (FLL). Mr. Crabbe used his technical background and his many years of teaching experience to bring the American-based program to junior high schools in Nova Scotia. Every year, mentors help children aged 9 to 14 build and program autonomous robots, perform research, present technical information and develop teamwork.
This is the first time NSCC nominees have been finalists in this prestigious awards competition, presented each year by the Discovery Centre. The Discovery Awards for Science and Technology will be presented at a gala dinner on November 26, 2009 in Halifax. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield will act as MC.
