NSCC campuses earn environmental certifications

November 19, 2009 – Media Release

Halifax, NS – Each of Nova Scotia Community College's (NSCC) 13 campuses has now been recognized by the Building Owner & Manager's Association (BOMA) with a BOMA Building Environmental Standards (BESt) certification.

Since 2005, BOMA BESt has been considered the industry standard for environmental management of existing commercial buildings. Buildings being evaluated for certification undergo energy and water audits and owners must provide plans or policies designed to reduce resource consumption. A third party assessor then determines whether the building meets BOMA BESt standards and if so, at which of four different levels.

Marconi, Pictou and Cumberland campuses earned Level Three certification; Akerley, Burridge, Institute of Technology, Kingstec, Lunenburg, Truro and Strait Area campuses earned Level Two; Shelburne and Annapolis Valley campuses earned Level One. Waterfront Campus achieved a BOMA BESt Level Four certification earlier this year, scoring 93 points on its BOMA BESt audit – the highest score to date by any building in Canada.

"BOMA BESt allows building owners and managers an opportunity to improve and manage their environmental footprint regardless of the ages of their buildings," says BOMA Nova Scotia President Pat Galipeau. BOMA BESt certified buildings must agree to a review every three years to ensure environmental performance is maintained or improves.

"This is another step towards our commitment to environmental stewardship. Through the BOMA BESt auditing processing we are ensuring that even our campuses that are over 30 years old are as sustainable as possible," says NSCC President Joan McArthur-Blair. "The BOMA BESt process places us on a track of continual improvement; that's a perfect fit for the culture of life-long learning NSCC encourages and supports throughout the province."
