NSCC receives strike notice, binding arbitration proposal from NSTU

October 9, 2009 – Media Release

Halifax, NS – Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) received notice last night from the Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) that a strike date has been set for College employees in the Union's faculty and professional support bargaining units. That date is Tuesday, October 20.

"The NSTU has also requested that the Minister of Education and NSCC consider binding arbitration as a means to seek a resolution in the days leading up to Tuesday, October 20," says Gina Brown, NSCC's Director of Marketing and Communications. "NSCC will explore this possibility as an option in our ongoing efforts to achieve a resolution, preferably without a strike."

NSCC's faculty and professional support colleagues have been in a legal position to strike since Friday, September 25, 2009. The College will use the period of notice provided by the union to inform students, employees and partners about the impacts of a potential strike.

While programs and services for NSCC learners and partners will continue to be delivered as usual up to Tuesday, October 20, the College is using the notice given by the NSTU to provide the College's 26,000 learners and many industry and community partners with information on what to expect during a strike. The College's website will be an important source of information and any developments will be shared directly with students and partners via email.

If a strike begins on Tuesday, October 20, all teaching and professional services that support learning will be suspended. However, all campuses will remain open supported by the more than 1,000 NSCC employees who will continue to work. Students will have access to libraries, bookstores, Student Services, Learning Commons, computer labs, cafeterias and classrooms. During a strike, updates on the availability of services at each campus, including hours of operation, will be posted on our website. Organizers of events scheduled to take place on NSCC campuses after the strike date are encouraged to contact the campus Principal with any questions.

Detailed information on what to expect for each NSCC program as well as apprenticeship, on-line, part-time and continuing education studies will be shared directly with students between now and the strike date.
