NSCC Congratulates Dalbrae Academy's Winning ROV Team

July 13, 2009 – Media Release

(Halifax), NS - Dalbrae Academy of Mabou, Nova Scotia bested schools from all around the world during an international Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) competition that took place from June 24-26 in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.

The team won first place in the 2009 Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre's (MATE) International ROV Competition held at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Twenty-six student teams competed in the Ranger class of the competition. Dalbrae received top marks in every category.

Dalbrae Academy's team members from grades 10 and 11 worked throughout the school year to construct their remotely operated vehicle. "We spent months designing and building our robot and testing it," said Keane MacLean, a grade 11 student. "We learned how to work together to solve problems and create a robot that could complete the underwater mission tasks accurately and quickly. This was an amazing opportunity and I see lots of career possibilities related to ROV's."

The students received guidance throughout the year from their teacher advisor Ed Dunphy and mentors from Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). Students used the wave tank at the Nautical Institute of the Strait Area Campus to test their ROV for buoyancy. They completed much of the construction of their robot on campus in the Electrical Industrial labs. The team earned the right to represent Nova Scotia after winning the 2009 Regional ROV competition in May at NSCC's Akerley Campus. The opportunity to attend the Buzzards Bay competition was made possible by support from Nova Scotia's Department of Labour and Workforce Development, NSCC and a number of community fundraising events.

NSCC supports high school ROV teams through CollegePrep, an initiative which actively links high school and College programs to help students find post-secondary paths that leads to successful careers. This year, teams from the Halifax Regional School Board and the Strait Area Regional School Board participated including an Options and Opportunities Program class. "Hands-on learning opportunities allow students to try different things before deciding on post-secondary programs. Competitions like this one give students a chance to make informed decisions on their future based on their own experience," says Virginia Johnson, Director, Student Pathways, NSCC."
