NSCC to become home to high-tech business

February 5, 2008 – Media Release

Entrepreneurs in the fields of Geomatics, related IT and Applied Communications Technologies have been handed a golden opportunity to work alongside some of the best scientists and researchers in those fields. On Monday NSCC and all three levels of government announced the creation of a new business incubation centre at the Annapolis Valley Campus.

"Nova Scotia Community College generates ideas, applied research and knowledge for its communities," said Dr. Joan McArthur-Blair, President, Nova Scotia Community College. "Expanding that platform to a new business incubation centre where research can grow into commercialization, entrepreneurship can be fostered and new businesses can be launched is very exciting. It is a business model in which everyone wins - especially the entrepreneurs and communities who have generously supported this initiative."

Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) was on hand to announce an investment of more than $100,000 in the project.

"The Government of Canada is getting things done for the people of Annapolis County," said Mr. Keddy, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of ACOA. "Supporting business creation and encouraging our graduates to stay here are key economic drivers for the region. Through this investment of more than $100,000, we're doing our part to strengthen the economy of Annapolis County."

The Government of Nova Scotia is contributing nearly $67,000 through Nova Scotia Economic Development, and the Municipalities of Bridgetown, Middleton, Annapolis Royal, and the County of Annapolis are contributing a total of $31,000 to the initiative.

"The Nova Scotia Community College is doing its part to help create sustainable economic prosperity and we are pleased to support this business incubation project," said Minister of Environment and Labour, Mark Parent, on behalf of Economic Development Minister, Angus MacIsaac. "Collaboration between the college and InNOVAcorp has resulted in a ground-breaking solution to help retain our skilled workforce and attract new business to the province."

"While supporting start-up companies at the Annapolis Valley Campus, Middleton, we hope to attract and retain other growth businesses to the area," said Peter Newton, Warden, Municipality of the County of Annapolis. "This collaborative business model is an important step towards job creation and economic sustainability for our area."

The business incubator will provide rental space, mentoring, hands-on management assistance, financial advice, technical services, technology support, broadband access, basic business services, and advice on accessing professional services. The three-year pilot project will foster the creation of small start-up technology-based companies.

ACOA's investment in this project is made through the Innovative Communities Fund.
