NSCC announces temporary space for Applied Art programs in Halifax effective September 2005
July 13, 2004 - Media Release
Applied Arts programs currently located at NSCC, Halifax Campus on Bell Road have been in search of a home to move into when the building closes in June 2005 - as they await completion of the new campus to be built on the Dartmouth waterfront in 2007. While other programs at Halifax Campus will be temporarily relocated to IT and Akerley Campuses, the unique space requirements of the Applied Arts programs ruled out this option - so leasing temporary space is the chosen solution.
Doug Barnes, Department Head Applied Arts & New Media (AA&NM), and Daurene Lewis, Principal of the Halifax Campuses, have confirmed that an exciting new space has been leased for the AA&NM programs. The specific address is 1577 Granville Street and the building is the location of the former Paramount Theatre.
The former theatre space was transformed into a contemporary multi-floored building four years ago. Mountain Equipment Co-op occupies floors 1 and 2; and NSCC will be located on floors 3 and 4, which have never been occupied.
The lease begins January 1, 2005 and NSCC will be doing some "fit up" in order to accommodate the various learning environments such as studios, computer labs and classrooms. The first intake of AA&NM students at the new space will be in September of 2005, so according to the current construction schedule for the new campus in Woodside, AA&NM will be at the Paramount space for two academic years (2005/2006 and 2006/2007).
The Programs that will be temporarily located there are:
- Screen Arts
- Graphic Design
- Applied Communication Arts
- Photography I
- Photography II / Digital Imaging
- Printing and Digital Technology
There will be approximately 150 students and 10 faculty at this location. The space is a modern urban setting in a neighbourhood that includes a number of industry partners associated with the AA&NM programs. From the 4th floor, a view of the new Metro campus site is visible, so they will be able to watch the progress of their future home.
