Enhance your English language skills to prepare for your college and university studies.

Program Overview

Are you a new Canadian with permanent residency; a refugee with protected person status; or a new Canadian citizen, who needs to update English language skills to pursue your post-secondary studies? English for Academic Purposes is a rigorous and challenging program designed to prepare students for the academic demands of a post-secondary institution. As closely as possible, it reflects the authentic tasks and assignments that students will be required to do when they go on to credit programs in either college or university. This includes such tasks as delivering a 15-minute presentation in English, participating in a controversial debate in front of a panel of judges, reading novels and short stories in English, and working in a team environment. Previous students have found that this program equips them well for the academic challenges and English language requirements of post-secondary education.

Choose NSCC

  • We keep the class size small to create a collaborative and supportive environment where students receive one-on-one attention from faculty.

  • This program will help you prepare for an academic program in a college or university providing: academic writing skills, academic reading skills, academic listening skills and academic speaking skills.

  • The program is offered each semester. Students who successfully complete one term and are not yet working at a CLBA 9 in all skill areas can continue studying in the next term.

Admission Requirements

  • The program is available to students who have landed immigrant or Canadian citizen status. Students must have:
    • a minimum High School education

    • intentions and a plan to pursue post-secondary studies

    • proof of current language proficiency either by means of:

      • TOEFL (CBT) score 173 or above

      • or CanTEST 3.5 – 4.0

      • or IELTS 5.5-6.0

      • or CLBA 7/7/6/6

  • Applicants are required to write a brief statement (1–2 paragraphs) that explains why they wish to enter the English for Academic Purposes program. Please include the name of the post-secondary program you wish to attend and the program/degree in which you hope to study.
