Technical Communications I This course introduces students to the writing, oral presentation, computer, critical thinking, and interpersonal communication skills required of technical professionals in the workplace. The fundamentals of clear, concise writing and presenting will be reviewed and refined. Experience will be gained in organizing, writing and presenting technical information. Job search skills will be addressed. Preparation of a portfolio will be discussed in detail during this course and throughout the communications related studies in this program. There will be several opportunities, through assignments and lab work, to develop portfolio components. Students will learn how to collect appropriate work samples and documentation from other courses in the program, as well as other sources.

Technical Communications II This course focuses on the interpersonal, written and oral technical communications skills necessary for working independently, and as part of a team, in a technical environment. Oral presentation skills will continue to be emphasized. Team-building principles, group dynamics and collaborative writing will be discussed. Students will participate in meetings and take responsibilities in a group project from its inception to completion, and evaluation. Students will also be introduced to applied research skills. They will conduct research and prepare a formal report on a topic related to water resource technology. Project management principles will also be introduced. Further skill development in written forms of technical and business documentation for the workplace will be emphasized. Informal and formal report-writing principles and editing will be introduced. Successful job interviews and the portfolio will be discussed.

Power Lab I This course will provide the learner with a basis for safety and environmental awareness of power plant and boiler operation. Learners will experience start up and shut down of a firetube boiler with emphasis on operation of equipment and their functions in the plant cycle. Logging of plant parameters will be carried out.
Please note that Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Workforce Development requires that all graduates applying for the mandatory certification are required to maintain a minimum of 90% attendance from all courses.

Safety and Safety Codes This course provides an orientation to provincial acts and regulations regarding safety, WHIMIS, its application to the worksite. Learners with discuss the costs and effects of workplace injuries on the individual worker and the business. The course will also focus on fire classifications and the types of extinguishing media suitable for each classification.

Prime Movers, Lube, Maintenance This course presents the fundamentals of operation and proper care of steam driven equipment, pumps, compressors, and internal combustion engines. The student will become knowledgeable in the areas of steam engine, steam turbine, pump, and compressor startup and shutdown. The need for good maintenance practices, lubrication, and lay-up of equipment is also presented so the equipment will operate trouble-free.

Math, Mechanics & Thermo This course includes a review of basic applied mathematics with an introduction to the physical sciences, applied mechanics, and thermodynamics. The students will perform arithmetic operations involving metric conversions, integers, fractions, decimals and percent, areas, volumes, ratio and proportions. Mechanics introduces the students to the theory and calculations relative to work, power, energy, mechanical advantage, vectors, velocity and acceleration, forces, pressure, friction, stress and strain, and power transmission. Thermodynamics examines the nature and conversion of heat. Topics include the thermodynamic laws, temperature measuring devices, change of state, the properties of steam including and introduction to the steam tables.

The course covers methods used to monitor and control gaseous, solid, liquid, and noise pollutants. In the piping portion the student is introduced to piping, piping components, and piping systems, including their safe operation. A comprehensive coverage of valves is included.
