Illustration III Illustration is the communication of ideas and messages through visible means, generally without the benefit of type. This class is illustration customized to the graphic design process with a focus on experimentation. The course will acquaint the student with alternative methods of generating imagery by hand. Students will examine sketching methods, hand drawn logos and type, mark making, and concept development in detail.

History of Graphic Design I Style suggests the dominant visual aesthetic of a particular time and place. This course will expose students to the material being designed and the audience for whom it is being produced during specific time periods. This academic introductory level course will provide a comprehensive survey of the evolution of graphic design, beginning with the advent of writing and ending mid century.

Typography I Typography is the art of designing with type. This class will discuss terminology drawn from early technology, the origins of the alphabet, terms of measurement, as well as the anatomy of type. We will discuss the process of selecting a typeface, deciding what words or phrases should be emphasized and how type can be arranged on a page. Students will conduct a variety of experiments using type as image.
