Program Overview

An Energy Sustainability Engineering Technologist (ESET) has a unique and broad skill set that serves in a diversity of technology applications in a variety of capacities.

The ESET graduate will fill the growing needs of employers in the rapidly expanding field of alternate energy, sustainability and energy systems management. Their work will involve energy auditing and modeling of existing conventional heating and lighting systems as well as specifying energy efficiency improvements for residential and commercial buildings. The ESET graduate will be able to assimilate site characteristics and client needs in order to provide advice on renewable energy alternatives, building design/renovation and heating/cooling system alternatives, and to improve energy efficiency.

Energy Sustainability Engineering Technologists are trained in the sizing, specification and commissioning of solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, biomass, geothermal, tidal and other sustainable energy systems. Beyond alternative and renewable energy systems, Energy Sustainability Engineering Technologists develop a strong understanding of building systems. With the use of industry recognized software, graduates will be able to make recommendations for the improvement of commercial, industrial and residential buildings.

Choose NSCC

  • NSCC prides itself in providing hands-on training in the Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology Program. You’ll study the theoretical concepts in class and then put the words into action within the lab and shop environment. Upon graduation you’ll already have exposure to real-life energy sustainability experiences.

  • Graduates may be eligible for membership in the Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists of Nova Scotia (Tech Nova). Graduates may be qualified to work anywhere in Canada and in several countries around the world.

Employment Opportunities

  • Graduates are able to find employment in a wide variety of sectors, and assume a wide variety of roles. Energy Sustainability Engineering Technologists will be prepared to succeed in the emerging fields of green buildings, energy conservation and alternate energy by providing design, assessment, commissioning, operational and evaluation services to engineers, architects, contractors, project managers, and facility owners.

  • Energy Sustainability Engineering Technologists may find employment in organizations that specialize in such areas as energy management, engineering consulting, architecture, technical sales, manufacturing, electrical distribution, alternate energy, government, non-governmental organizations (NGO’s), and building contractors.

Admission Requirements

  • High School Graduation Diploma including: Academic Grade 12 Math; Academic Grade 12 English; and either Academic Grade 12 Physics or Academic Grade 12 Chemistry; or a certificate, diploma, or degree in a trade, physical science, engineering or architecture program; or equivalent industry experience.

  • You must also submit a letter of intent stating why you are interested in the Energy Sustainability Engineering program and how it will help you achieve your future goals. Your letter is a significant factor in determining your admission to the program.

Other Info

  • There is a significant emphasis on mathematical and physical analysis, report-writing and communications requiring good Math/Physics and Communications/English skills.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills are an asset in this program especially when it comes to designing, testing and troubleshooting equipment and systems.

  • You’re expected to develop a portfolio of your work as part of this program of study. A portfolio is a powerful and convincing way to demonstrate your achievements to future employers over and above a standard résumé.

  • The School of Trades and Technology has specific requirements for health and safety practices and procedures for all shops and labs. Students practice 5S+S quality system throughout the entire program and wear specified personal protective equipment when training in designated shops or labs. Students are required to maintain a work record book or journal.

  • Co-operative Education (Co-op) – This program is eligible for an optional Co-op credit course. Co-op provides an opportunity for paid employment between the first and second year of your program. Employers, as co-educators, provide learning opportunities beyond the bounds of the classroom giving you a well-rounded education enriched by practical application.
