Program Overview

Civil engineering involves the planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of structures and public works, and altering geography to suit human needs. Civil Engineering Technologists work on various aspects of built structures, highways, marine structures, municipal infrastructure, and more. This program gives you an overview of the field in the context of environmental sustainability, so that you can develop projects that are feasible, practical, and ecologically sensitive. Participating in the development or construction of a project is an empowering process, where you can see the results of your efforts.

Build your professional portfolio to show employers that you can apply engineering principles and practices to analyze and solve complex technical problems, test and analyze materials and structural elements and research and prepare graphical and other technical documents. You also gain skills and knowledge to interpret the National Building Code and other Codes, Standards and Regulations appropriate to the practice of civil engineering.

Admission Requirements

  • High School Graduation Diploma or equivalent, including: Academic Grade 12 English; Academic Grade 12 Math; and Academic Grade 12 Physics.
  • If you do not have the required academic credits, NSCC offers a variety of credit courses through the Academic & Career Connections program.

  • Earn recognized credentials – This program is accredited with the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB), a standing committee of The Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT). CTAB accreditation means that this program has been evaluated against standards designed by industry leaders across Canada and is recognized internationally. Graduates may be eligible for membership with TechNova, the certifying organization for Engineering and Applied Science Technicians and Technologists in Nova Scotia.
  • NSCC - University Articulation & Transfer Agreements – This program may provide advanced standing for graduates who want to continue their studies beyond 2 years to complete a university degree or advance their studies abroad.

Employment Opportunities

  • Graduates have a variety of options for employment that include laboratory analysis and testing of materials used in civil engineering projects, structural design, steel detailing, municipal design, project management, technical sales, inspection of construction projects, surveying, and technical writing for consultants, governmental agencies, contractors, and materials suppliers.

  • Online Courses – Some courses are available online.
  • Co-operative Education (Co-op) – This program is eligible for an optional Co-op credit course. Co-op provides an opportunity for paid employment (of at least 12-weeks) in a field related to your program between your first and second year.
  • Safety Training – This program places a high importance on providing you with skills and knowledge to work safely in industry. You will participate in a number of introductory safety awareness courses to prepare for employment.
