Certification
Fishing Master Certification
Certification training is available for all levels of Fishing Master. The maximum number of participants per course is twelve. Courses can be conducted at the School of Fisheries in Pictou, in any Nova Scotia Community College campus, or at sites within the coastal community.
Fishing Master Class IV
Courses leading to certification:

Participants must have a Seafarers Medical, and acquire at least 12 months of sea service performing deck duties on fishing vessels of 6 meters or more in length.

Marine Engineering Certification

Participants must acquire 12 months of sea service as an engineer, engine-room rating, or assistant engineer on a vessel that has propulsive power of at least 125 kW.
Small Commercial Vessel Operation
Certification training is available for the operation of small (less than 60 gross tonnes) commercially operated passenger and non-passenger vessels. The maximum number of participants per course is twelve. Courses can be conducted at the School of Fisheries in Pictou, in any Nova Scotia Community College campus, or at sites within the coastal community.
Master Limited

Subject-matter deemed appropriate by Transport Canada to the area of operation and the type and gross tonnage of the vessel to which the certificate relates as set out in TP 2293.
Participants must have a Seafarers Medical, acquire a minimum of 2 months of sea service on vessels of a gross tonnage at least equivalent to that of the vessel to which the certificate is sought.

Participants must demonstrate a knowledge to operate with safety the machinery and equipment of the ship for which the certificate is required.
Marine Safety
The School of Fisheries is an approved training institution for Marine Emergency Duties and St. John Ambulance first aid training. The following safety related courses are conducted at the facility in Pictou or in communities central to those requiring it.

Communications Simulation
The School of Fisheries is an approved training institution for GMDSS Restricted Operator's Certificate - Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC) radiotelephone training. This course is conducted utilizing pc-based communications simulators and is a requirement for nautical certification and for continued proficiency. ROC-MC courses are conducted at the facility in Pictou or in communities central to those requiring it.

Fish Harvesting Technology
Courses are delivered to train fishermen in the general skills required in the fish harvesting industry, or customize the program around a specific operation or type of fishing gear.

Boating Safety
The increase in the number of small vessels for recreation and operational use has resulted in a demand for training for certification and safe operation. The following courses are offered to assist in the operation of these vessels:

Customized Training
A broad range of courses can be designed and delivered to meet a specific training need. Many of the School of Fisheries regular course offerings have resulted from customized training initiatives that have been designed in response to a client requirement. Customized training courses have been delivered throughout the province, Northern Canada, the Caribbean and Central America.
