Internet: HOTSPOT@NSCC

NSCC will be launching a new type of Internet service for students this September 2007. This service will be made available for students who wish to bring their personal laptops to the college.

For security reasons access will be limited and have some restrictions in place, the following is an outline of the service and expected usage practices.

  • This is an internet only service, it is not the intent to provide for program delivery although students may find it to be sufficient. The College will provide access to the internet through select wireless access points throughout the campuses. Since the service is Internet only, access to resources such as NSCC software, printing and file services will be unavailable.
  • Speed of the service will vary depending on usage. IT Services will make every effort to manage performance as best possible.
  • Each user of this service will be required to install a policy key to their laptop which will ensure compliancy set by the NSCC security committee. These security scans are designed to ensure the integrity of devices using the service
  • Users will be expected to adhere to the NSCC Computer Resources Usage Policy.
  • Signal strength will be limited to certain areas and may vary throughout the campus. The NSCC will make reasonable effort to provide the best quality in the high usage areas; however the NSCC makes no guarantee of signal quality.
  • Support: NSCC IT staff will assist students with connection issues as it relates to the stability of the service itself. IT staff will need to verify the service is working properly, the student is responsible to adhere to the security policies imposed by the NSCC.
    • The NSCC IT staff are not responsible to load software on student laptops, students will be required to ensure such items as Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Operating System security patches are installed and running properly
    • College software agreements to do currently include student personal laptops, IT staff will not load college licensed software.

Current Policies being enforced

  • Industry recognize anti-virus enabled and up to date
