Passion
Discover yourself. Live your dream.
"Music is my passion. I've been playing piano since I was seven. But even knowing that I am not sure exactly what I want to do with it. At NSCC I am learning performance. I am learning technology. And I'm learning the music business. I can't wait to have a career in something I love."
Amanda Brownhill, Music Arts Class of 2009
College programs are as much about self discovery and learning what you're passionate about as they are learning new skills. Whether you have a pretty good idea of what you want to do or are still trying to figure it all out, here are a few tips to keep in mind
Follow your heart.
You don't have to decide on a specific occupation right now, but you do need to start thinking about
- what interests you (and what doesn't),
- what you enjoy doing,
- what is really important to you, and
- what your preferences and limits are.
Focus on the journey.
Most people's career paths look more like a winding road than a straight stretch of highway. It is reasonable to expect that there will be some detours and slow-downs. It is just as reasonable to expect that you will discover new exciting destinations - providing you take advantage of the unplanned things that happen to you along the way.
Stay learning.
Graduating from high school, college, or university is not the end of learning. The program you choose to start out with will be just that - a starting place. You will continue to add to your skills and knowledge throughout your career.
Access your allies
You are not alone when it comes to building your career. Many people are willing to provide you with information and help as you make work and training decisions. Start now to develop a network of people who support your efforts. Be open to listening to their advice and feedback.
NSCC makes learning fun. We see you as a rising star and we're going to treat you that way. Our graduates discover their passions and are finding their success. You can too!
