Debi Rutledge, Faculty
NSCC School of Access
They respect your knowledge and abilities here - I just helped design a new science lab. That kind of opportunity doesn't come along every day. I have a closer relationship with my co-workers than I've ever experienced before, and a great relationship with my students. I love it here!
Debi Rutledge
After spending several years traveling, Debi returned to school as an adult to get her Bachelor of Education. Her personal experience as an adult learner is one that she has in common with her students. As a faculty member for the Adult Learning program, Debi works with other mature students returning to school to pursue their dreams. "Going back to school as an adult is an amazing experience," she says. "The feelings of fear, anticipation, excitement and frustration are all combined into a huge ball in the stomach. The world suddenly opens up as new learning takes place."
Debi came to the college with a keen interest in supporting learners in transition and the varied education needs of her community. Prior to joining NSCC, she taught with the Chignecto Central Regional School Board for seven years and spent some time working at the Enterprise Development Centre at St. Francis Xavier University. For Debi, the college is a wonderful place to work and for her it all comes down to the relationships she has with the people she works and learns with everyday. "When I first arrived at NSCC, the faculty was quick to assist me and in no time I felt right at home. Teamwork is what I believe is one of the reasons NSCC is such a wonderful place to be. Faculty, staff and management work together to make the students' experience as diverse as possible", she says.
