Wanda Muise
Business Administration, Class of 2005
The College was the best experience of my life.
Wanda Muise
Wanda Muise always knew she'd have to go back to school. Tired of ten dollar an hour jobs and sky-high rent in Toronto, Wanda moved to Nova Scotia to be near family. In the process she also discovered a different kind of family: the NSCC kind. "The College was the best experience of my life."
Before she graduated from the Business Administration program with honours and was nominated for class valedictorian, Wanda had to overcome a lack of confidence and extreme shyness. She credits NSCC faculty with pushing her to achieve her potential. "The instructors were just so helpful. They were phenomenal. We could go to them anytime we wanted to."
Close relationships with peers and the desire to give back also helped Wanda move from timid and fearful to someone who routinely chairs meetings, interviews people, and stands as a leader in her community.
Today, Wanda edits and manages the content for the Mi'kmaq Maliseet Nations News, a monthly newspaper that goes to Mi'kmaq communities around the world. "It's fast paced and keeps me on my toes," says Wanda. "I love it. This is what I want to do." But her job as Managing Editor also allows her to contribute directly to issues she feels are important - namely the concerns of First Nations people. "This job is fulfilling my life and enabling me to give back to the community. It's nice to make an impact."
The fact that NSCC is so connected to Nova Scotian communities is one of the things Wanda loves about the College. "NSCC gives back to the community, just as much as the community works with them." To this end, Wanda continues to tutor NSCC students and volunteers at career fairs where she can talk to young people about the importance of an education. "To me education is everything. I'm on the journey of lifelong learning."
