All the right ingredients
When the Consul General, Leonard Hill, has a dinner party or a special function, it's Steven's food vision and elbow grease that pull the event off.
Steven Kendall has a huge, beautiful kitchen at his disposal, laden with glimmering utensils and a well stocked pantry. It's a professional cook's dream. Since February 2006, Steven has been working for the US Consulate General as the Resident Cook in the Consul General's Halifax home. He loves it. "It's a lot different from working in restaurants - a totally different pace and I get to do all my own food instead of having to do someone else's food."
When the Consul General, Leonard Hill, has a dinner party or a special function, it's Steven's food vision and elbow grease that pull the event off. He is responsible for the creation of each menu, all the food preparation, and all the cooking when Hill and his wife entertain.
"My wife and I have been very impressed with Steven's imaginative ideas, willingness to experiment and try new things, skill in the kitchen, and commitment to his job," says Hill. "He has done a number of events for us, from large receptions to intimate dinners, all of which have been fantastic. Steven is a real pleasure to work with and a great representative of NSCC."
Needing to be productive and do something with his hands, in addition to a natural flair for cooking, led Steven to NSCC's two-year Culinary Arts Program. He completed his first year at Marconi campus in his native Cape Breton and upon moving to Halifax, graduated from Akerley in 2005. At both campuses, Steven excelled, winning the Nova Scotia Skills Competition in 2004 and placing bronze as team captain in the Nova Scotia Junior Hot Salon and the Atlantic Provinces Culinary Exhibition.
He praises NSCC's small class sizes and excellent and involved instructors who go the extra mile for students. In fact it was one of his instructors, Deb Connors of Akerley, who recommended Steven for the cook position with the Consular General. For this 28-year old cook, who has a previous university degree in Business, his dream would be to be able to combine his cooking and business skills one day. "I'd like to own something - maybe have a catering company or a restaurant." In the meantime, he's enjoying the spice of variety and creativity that his current job allows and in his off time eats a lot of TV dinners. "The last thing I want to do when I get home is cook," he laughs.
