Setting a learning example
I had a lot of support from NSCC staff and instructors and classmates who helped me push my way through.

"I got to be who I wanted to be." It's what Sherry Wilson says about the transformation in her life since acquiring her high school diploma, completing NSCC's Business Administration Program, and landing a great job as an Accounts Manager at a growing Halifax firm.
This single mother of three kids dropped out of school when she was 15 and went right into the workforce. "I didn't get to be involved in Student Council or play sports." It's partly why going back to school in her thirties was so exciting, once she got over her initial fears. It was a chance to do all the things she missed out on as a kid. She became heavily involved in student life at NSCC's Akerley campus, sitting as chair of student council, starting up a diversity committee, and graduating as Valedictorian of her class in 2005.
Although Sherry worked tirelessly, often getting only four hours sleep a night after looking after her kids and studying, she readily admits that she didn't do it on her own. "I had a lot of support from NSCC staff and instructors and classmates who helped me push my way through." This was one of the key messages of her Valedictorian speech. "I really wanted people to know that no matter where you come from or how hard your life is, if you put your mind to it and have support, you can succeed."
Succeed is certainly what Sherry has done. Realizing her dream of getting her high school diploma has inspired her to continue her studies and lead by example for her children. She loves her job at Internetworking Atlantic Inc. and is stimulated and challenged by the learning that occurs everyday. And she doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon. Plans are already in the works for a university degree to become a Chartered Accountant.
