Apprentice Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

Jennifer Maloney

Jennifer Maloney - Apprentice Aircraft Maintenance EngineerI graduated from NSCC's Aviation Institute in 2008. For the past year, I've been employed at IMP Aerospace Group as an apprentice aircraft maintenance engineer. I work in an overhaul hanger where military planes come in for service. We tear them down and replace and repair anything and everything that needs to be done. We replace and repair the skin of the aircraft, repair fuel tanks, install new landing gear, install turbine engines and work on smaller components that come out of the aircraft. I'm part of the flight control crew. We install and repair flaps, ailerons, elevators and remove and install the new cables. Whatever is involved with moving the aircraft in the air, we have a part in maintaining or fixing it.

As one of the few aboriginal women in a male-dominated field, I tend to stand out a bit more than others. I've had to prove myself on the job; prove to the men that I can do the work. Being a woman in this industry means I need to do my job with confidence and do it well.

I really enjoy my work and the things I get to experience. There's always something that needs to be done so I'm always busy.

I really enjoyed my time at NSCC and would recommend the program to anyone. Maybe I'll go back someday, as an instructor.
